Leaving your beloved dog or cat in someone else’s care is a big decision. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, heading out of town for work, or dealing with an unexpected trip, the thought of leaving your furry family member behind can bring up plenty of questions.

Will they be lonely? Will they get enough attention? What if they get sick? Will they spend their entire stay cooped up in a tiny cage? And what happens if something goes wrong while you’re away?

If you’ve ever worried about these things, you’re certainly not alone. Many pet parents hesitate to use a boarding kennel because they’re concerned about their pet’s safety, comfort, health, and happiness. These concerns deserve thoughtful answers, not a shrug and a promise that everything will be fine.

At Doggie Dude Ranch and the O’Cat Corral in Watkins, Colorado, serving the Denver metro area, we understand that pets are family. Our owners purchased the facility because they wanted the kind of boarding experience they had struggled to find for their own beloved pets, such as comfortable accommodations, engaging activities, emergency responsiveness, and plenty of human interaction and TLC.

Let’s explore 15 common concerns about pet boarding and how our team works to address them, so you can make an informed decision about your pet’s next stay.

1. “What If My Dog Catches Kennel Cough?”

Canine or Kennel Cough and other contagious respiratory illnesses are legitimate concerns for anyone considering dog boarding. When dogs spend time around other dogs, infectious diseases can sometimes spread, even in facilities with strong cleaning procedures. At Doggie Dude Ranch, we require dogs to have current vaccinations, including Bordetella, and follow strict cleaning and disinfecting procedures. We also work to minimize transmission risks through appropriate sanitation, ventilation, and isolation of dogs who are visibly ill. Additionally, sick dogs will be transported separately from other dogs in a dedicated Stagecoach shuttle bus.

However, keep in mind that no boarding facility can guarantee that a dog will never contract kennel cough or another contagious illness. Vaccination reduces risk but does not provide complete protection against every infectious agent.

We encourage prospective clients to discuss these risks with us and review our policies before booking. You can learn more on our Frequently Asked Questions page.

2. “Will My Cat Have to Stay Next to Barking Dogs?”

Cats and dogs may share a household beautifully, but that doesn’t mean every cat enjoys spending time around unfamiliar barking dogs. Cats are sensitive to noise, unfamiliar scents, and changes in their surroundings, so a peaceful environment matters.

That’s why the O’Cat Corral has a separate cat boarding area designed specifically for feline guests.

Our private cat condos measure 32 inches wide by 32 inches deep and seven feet tall, with five levels that give cats room to climb, rest, eat, and explore. Each condo has its own ventilation system, helping prevent cats from breathing air circulated from another cat’s space. Litter areas are also separated from sleeping areas.

With cat toys, scratching posts, and attentive caregivers, our feline guests can enjoy their own comfortable retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the dog boarding area.

3. “Will My Dog Be Confined to a Small Cage All Day?”

Nobody wants to imagine their energetic Labrador, curious Terrier, or playful mixed-breed pup spending an entire vacation staring at four walls. At Doggie Dude Ranch, dogs receive private boarding suites rather than being kept in small cages throughout the day. Our canine accommodations come in two sizes: 5-by-6-foot and 5-by-8-foot suites. Six of the smaller suites have full-size tempered-glass doors designed with the safety and comfort of puppies and senior dogs in mind.

But comfortable sleeping quarters are only part of the experience. Dogs also enjoy supervised playtime, outdoor breaks, and rest periods throughout the day. Our schedule balances activity with downtime, so dogs have opportunities to burn energy without being expected to play continuously. After all, even the most enthusiastic tennis ball chaser needs a nap eventually!

4. “What If There’s No Outdoor Space Where My Dog Can Play?”

Some boarding facilities have limited outdoor space or rely primarily on indoor kennels. Some only offer indoor play yards with fake turf. For dogs who love sniffing, stretching their legs, and exploring the outdoors, access to appropriate outdoor areas can make a significant difference in their boarding stay. Doggie Dude Ranch offers spacious outdoor play yards where dogs can enjoy fresh air and supervised group play. Our team oversees playtime to help keep activities safe and enjoyable and always goes around immediately picking up any poop left behind so that other dogs don’t ingest it. Additionally, in order to keep the dog yards clean and free from infection, the dog yards are made of pea gravel covered by fake turf, and they are vacuumed and disinfected once a week.

On the flip side, some kennels abandon dogs outdoors all day to suffer the elements. Doggie Dude Ranch’s staff will never leave pets outdoors in inclement weather or without a place to take shelter. Outdoor time is always balanced with indoor rest periods, and dogs are brought inside for their scheduled naps rather than being left outdoors all day.

For dogs who enjoy a good splash and need some refreshing during those hot summer days, we also have a large, in-ground swimming pool. It’s open seasonally, generally from April through November, weather permitting. Pool time is supervised, and first-time swimmers wear life jackets while getting comfortable in the water. The pool is always supervised by at least four staff members, so your dog is never left alone at risk of drowning.

5. “Will Anyone Actually Spend Time with My Pet?”

This is one of the biggest worries pet parents have, particularly if their animals are used to plenty of attention at home. Many kennels will simply stick dogs and cats in a cage, set food in front of them when it comes time to eat, and throw them outside when they need to relieve themselves. Here at Doggie Dude Ranch and the O’Cat Corral, animal care is about more than providing food, water, and a clean place to sleep. Our team members are animal lovers who participate in daily care, supervised play, and enrichment. Our highest priority is making our four-legged friends feel like they are family.

Dogs get opportunities to interact with compatible canine playmates and animal-loving staff members, who can’t wait to play with them. Our cat guests also have access to toys, scratching posts, climbing spaces, and, most importantly, attention from cat-loving caregivers.

Of course, every pet has a different personality. Some dogs want to make friends with everyone, while others prefer a gentler pace. Some cats demand attention immediately, while others need time to observe their surroundings before coming out of their shells. If any animal does not do well with human interaction, we will respect their need for space as well.

We recognize that individual preferences matter and aim to make each guest’s stay as comfortable as possible.

6. “What If My Dog Gets Into a Fight with Another Dog?”

Social play can be wonderful for dogs who enjoy canine companionship, but group environments carry inherent risks. Even friendly dogs can become overwhelmed, misread another dog’s signals, or react unexpectedly.

Doggie Dude Ranch is a social boarding facility, so dogs must be able to mix successfully into an appropriate play group. We do not accept aggressive dogs, and trained staff supervise our play yards. This is why every new pet guest must come for a trial day of daycare before staying at our boarding facility.

Our team works to provide suitable play environments, but supervision cannot eliminate every possibility of an injury or unexpected interaction. Some dogs may also display reactive behavior even if they have previously been friendly with other dogs.

If a concern arises, we contact the pet’s owner and respond according to the situation. We encourage owners to share accurate information about their dog’s temperament, behavior, and social preferences before the stay.

You can review our boarding preparation guidelines for more information about the responsibilities and risks associated with social boarding.

7. “What If My Pet Gets Sick or Has a Medical Emergency?”

The thought of your pet becoming ill while you’re away can be frightening. You want to know that someone will recognize a problem and take appropriate action.

Our staff are experienced in caring for animals and observing changes in their behavior or condition. We have established emergency procedures and several team members who live on the property and can respond if an emergency occurs.

If a pet needs closer monitoring than our standard boarding arrangement can provide, we may arrange alternative care, such as having a staff member stay with the animal or transporting the pet to an overnight veterinary facility, depending on the circumstances.

It’s also important to understand our overnight arrangements: staff do not remain inside the kennel building overnight, approximately 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Motion-detecting video surveillance operates in the building and play yards, and certain rooms have dedicated video monitoring for dogs with specific medical, behavioral, or escape-related concerns.

We believe prospective clients should understand these arrangements before booking, especially if their pet requires continuous overnight observation.

For complete details, please read our Frequently Asked Questions and discuss any special medical concerns with our team.

8. “What If My Pet Has a Special Diet or Takes Medication?”

Some pets are happy to eat just about anything. Others have sensitive stomachs, food allergies, carefully measured portions, or medications that must be administered on a schedule. You may be worried that if you bring your pet to a kennel, the staff will disregard their dietary needs and feed them any old kibble they have on the shelf.

We ask owners to provide clear feeding instructions and enough of their pet’s regular food for the stay. Our team can prepare meals according to the instructions provided, helping maintain familiar routines and accommodate individual dietary needs. If a dog or cat requires prescription food, we also require that the owners provide the prescription in case the food runs out during their pet’s stay.

We also administer eligible medications without an additional administration fee. All medications must arrive in their original container, clearly labeled with the pet’s name and correct dosage. We do not administer injectable medications, such as insulin, and cannot change prescribed dosages at an owner’s request.

Please disclose medical conditions, allergies, dietary restrictions, and medications when arranging your pet’s stay. If your pet has complex medical needs, contact us in advance to confirm whether we can safely accommodate them.

Our boarding preparation page explains what to bring and how to prepare your pet.

9. “What If My Pet Is Treated Poorly When I’m Not There?”

This concern often comes down to trust. You know how your pet should be handled, and you want to feel confident that the people caring for them will treat them with patience and kindness. Our approach begins with a genuine love of animals. Our team cares for pets through their daily routines, including meals, playtime, rest, grooming, and individual attention.

We also encourage prospective clients to visit the facility before booking. Seeing the accommodations, meeting the people who will care for your pet, and asking questions can help you decide whether the environment feels right for your family. We welcome questions about our routines, safety procedures, and boarding policies. You don’t have to make a decision based on website photos alone.

Schedule a visit through our contact page and get to know us before your pet’s stay.

10. “What If My Pet Is Lonely or Bored?”

Pets thrive on stimulation, but that doesn’t mean they all need the same kind of entertainment. Some dogs love group play and outdoor adventures. Others prefer a quieter day with comfortable resting spaces and a little personal attention. Cats often enjoy climbing, scratching, playing with toys, or simply observing their surroundings.

Our dog guests have opportunities for supervised outdoor play, social interaction, and seasonal swimming. They also receive scheduled rest periods to recover from their adventures.

Meanwhile, our feline guests have multi-level private condos, scratching posts, toys, and opportunities for interaction with caregivers.

Our goal is to provide more than a place to sleep while their families are away. We want pets to have an engaging, comfortable stay that respects their individual needs.

You can explore our dog boarding services and cat boarding services for details about each experience.

11. “What If My Pet Gets Too Hot or Too Cold?”

Colorado weather can be unpredictable. A sunny afternoon can become chilly quickly, and summer temperatures can create additional challenges for animals spending time outdoors. Doggie Dude Ranch and the O’Cat Corral’s facilities have climate-control features, including air conditioning, radiant heat, and purified air, to help keep indoor accommodations comfortable throughout the year.

As previously mentioned, outdoor activities are balanced with indoor time and rest. During winter, our care routines may include bringing small dogs inside to play, using jackets for short-haired dogs, and blow-drying long-haired dogs after snowy play sessions. In warmer weather, dogs can enjoy supervised swimming in our in-ground pool when it is open and conditions permit.

We recognize that temperature tolerance varies by breed, age, coat, and health. If your pet has special temperature-related needs, let us know before booking.

12. “What If I Can’t Get My Pet to the Facility?”

Getting a pet to a boarding facility can be one more logistical challenge when you’re already preparing for a trip. Perhaps you have an early flight, a busy work schedule, or multiple pets to transport. Pet boarding facilities may also be located far from your home or from the airport. Doggie Dude Ranch and the O’Cat Corral knows the challenges our clients face, which is why we offer a shuttle service for owners who can’t make it all the way to our facilities.

Our Stagecoach pet pickup and delivery service serves the Denver metro area and surrounding communities, including the Aurora and Denver International Airport areas. Scheduled pickup and drop-off windows are available in the morning and afternoon, and advance booking is recommended because vehicle availability can fill up. Pets are handled and transported according to our driver policies, including the use of secure crates for dogs during transportation.

If transportation is the main obstacle preventing you from boarding your pet, our pet pickup and delivery service may be the solution you need.

13. “What If My Dog Can’t Swim, or There Isn’t a Pool?”

Not every dog is a natural swimmer, and not every boarding facility offers swimming as part of its activities. If your dog loves water, however, a pool can be a welcome bonus. Our in-ground dog pool is a special feature of Doggie Dude Ranch. Swimming is available seasonally, generally from April through November, depending on the weather.

Pool time is supervised, and first-time swimmers wear life jackets while being introduced to the water. Dogs are not required to swim to enjoy their boarding stay. They can participate in other suitable activities instead. We want dogs to have opportunities for exercise and enrichment without forcing them into activities that make them uncomfortable. Smaller bone baths and hose-off opportunities are also offered for dogs who are too timid to swim in the big pool but still want to cool off.

Take a look at our dog pool page to learn more about the facility and our swimming arrangements.

14. “How Will I Know My Pet Is Doing Okay?”

Being away from your pet can feel strange, especially if you’re accustomed to seeing them every day. It’s natural to wonder whether they’re eating well, enjoying themselves, making friends, or simply waiting for you to come home. You’re in luck! Since Doggie Dude Ranch regularly shares photos of its furry visitors on our Facebook page, you can always take a peek at how your dog’s doing during their vacation. These snapshots give owners a glimpse of the pets enjoying their stay. Although photos and updates cannot replace continuous live monitoring, they offer a useful window into your pet’s boarding experience.

Follow us on Facebook to see some of the adorable guests who visit the ranch.

We also use Gingr, our online boarding management system, where clients can manage pet profiles, request reservations, update vaccination records, and provide feeding instructions.

Our house policy is that if there is a concern about your pet, we will contact you. We don’t want owners left unaware of any issue that needs their attention.

15. “What If Boarding Means My Pet Won’t Get the Little Extras They Love?”

For many pets, the small things make a big difference. A favorite activity, a tasty treat, a comfortable bed, or a fresh bath can make a stay feel more enjoyable. Doggie Dude Ranch’s dog boarding rates include playtime, seasonal swimming for dogs who participate, bedding, and a frozen peanut butter Kong. A complimentary bath and brush is also included with a stay of five nights or longer.

Additional grooming services are available, and our grooming page explains the options.

Our team also offers take-home treats so your pet can enjoy a little something special after their stay. You can learn more about the available options on our take-home dog and cat treats page.

For cats, comfort comes from a different mix of details: private multi-level condos, separate litter areas, toys, scratching posts, and caregivers who understand that feline affection often happens on feline terms.

These extras aren’t a substitute for safety or attentive care, but they can help make boarding a more positive experience.

One More Thing: Ask Questions Before You Book

No boarding facility can promise that every stay will be entirely free of stress, illness, or unexpected events. Social environments carry risks, and every animal has different needs. A trustworthy provider should be willing to explain its policies, limitations, and emergency procedures rather than making promises that no one can guarantee.

Before choosing a facility, ask about overnight supervision, cleaning protocols, vaccination requirements, medication administration, playgroup policies, emergency veterinary care, and how the staff will communicate with you during your pet’s stay.

Here at Doggie Dude Ranch and the O’Cat Corral, we always encourage pet parents to visit, ask questions, and decide whether our approach fits their pet’s needs. We want you to feel comfortable with your choice and understand what to expect before you leave your furry family member with us.

Your Pet Is Family. We Treat Them That Way.

Boarding your pet doesn’t have to mean sacrificing comfort, activity, or personal attention. With the right preparation and a facility that takes your concerns seriously, you can find an arrangement that works for both you and your furry companion.

Doggie Dude Ranch and the O’Cat Corral offers private dog suites, dedicated cat condos, supervised play, seasonal swimming, grooming, pet transportation, and a team that genuinely enjoys caring for animals. Most importantly, we recognize that each guest arrives with their own personality, routines, and needs. We’d love to show you around, answer your questions, and help you determine whether we’re the right fit for your pet.
